About the Stones

Ruby. Ruby is corundum — aluminium oxide coloured red by chromium — and at Mohs 9 the hardest thing in the range after diamond. Corundum of any other colour is called Sapphire. The opaque ruby most crystal shops sell is genuine ruby below gem clarity, and rutile needles inside it can throw a six-rayed star when cut as a cabochon. July's birthstone.

Sapphire. Sapphire is gem corundum — crystalline aluminium oxide, with iron and titanium giving the classic blue. Red corundum is Ruby; corundum of any other colour is Sapphire, so the two are the same mineral with entirely separate teachings. Opaque material is genuine sapphire below gem clarity. September's birthstone.

Wearing & Care

Rings take more knocks than any other piece of jewelry: put it on last, after lotion and perfume, and take it off for hand-washing, housework, gardening, the gym, swimming and sleep. Sterling silver tarnishes slowly in air; a silver polishing cloth keeps it bright. Ruby: Extremely durable: warm water, a soft brush, and it can take daily wear. The only caution is the reverse — it will scratch almost anything else, so store it apart from other stones. Cleanse it with moonlight or sunlight. Sapphire: One of the most durable stones in the shop: warm soapy water and a soft brush, safe for water, salt and sun, excellent for everyday wear.
