Ruby in Kyanite is a unique combination mineral that was recently found in southern India. Occasionally small veins of all 3 minerals can be found together, thus creating an extremely rare mineral known on the market as Ruby Zoiste in Kyanite. Crafters and sculptors strive to find this variation in raw form, so that it can eventually be worked into shapes, spheres, hearts, and sculptures. For the average collector acquiring raw specimens is extremely difficult yet very valuable.

About the Stones

Ruby. Ruby is corundum — aluminium oxide coloured red by chromium — and at Mohs 9 the hardest thing in the range after diamond. Corundum of any other colour is called Sapphire. The opaque ruby most crystal shops sell is genuine ruby below gem clarity, and rutile needles inside it can throw a six-rayed star when cut as a cabochon. July's birthstone.

Kyanite. Kyanite is an aluminium silicate that grows in bladed, splintery crystals — named from the Greek kyanos, blue. It has two hardnesses in the same crystal: soft along the blade, hard across it, which is why it was once called disthene, 'two strengths'. Green and Black Kyanite are separate stones with their own teachings.

Care

Ruby: Extremely durable: warm water, a soft brush, and it can take daily wear. The only caution is the reverse — it will scratch almost anything else, so store it apart from other stones. Cleanse it with moonlight or sunlight. Kyanite: It splits lengthwise — handle by the flat, store flat, and never stack anything on a blade. Water-safe in principle, but don't soak it; the bladed structure traps water between the layers. It never needs cleansing itself.
