About the Stone

Ruby is corundum — aluminium oxide coloured red by chromium — and at Mohs 9 the hardest thing in the range after diamond. Corundum of any other colour is called Sapphire. The opaque ruby most crystal shops sell is genuine ruby below gem clarity, and rutile needles inside it can throw a six-rayed star when cut as a cabochon. July's birthstone.

Wearing & Care

Rings take more knocks than any other piece of jewelry: put it on last, after lotion and perfume, and take it off for hand-washing, housework, gardening, the gym, swimming and sleep. Gold vermeil is a thick layer of gold over sterling silver — keep it away from perfume, lotion and water so the gold lasts, and polish it only with a soft cloth. Extremely durable: warm water, a soft brush, and it can take daily wear. The only caution is the reverse — it will scratch almost anything else, so store it apart from other stones. Cleanse it with moonlight or sunlight. US sizes. Not sure of yours? Measure a ring that already fits across the inside — 16.5 mm is a 6, 17.3 a 7, 18.1 an 8, 18.9 a 9.
