About the Stone

Ruby is corundum — aluminium oxide coloured red by chromium — and at Mohs 9 the hardest thing in the range after diamond. Corundum of any other colour is called Sapphire. The opaque ruby most crystal shops sell is genuine ruby below gem clarity, and rutile needles inside it can throw a six-rayed star when cut as a cabochon. July's birthstone.

Wearing & Care

Rings take more knocks than any other piece of jewelry: put it on last, after lotion and perfume, and take it off for hand-washing, housework, gardening, the gym, swimming and sleep. Sterling silver tarnishes slowly in air; a silver polishing cloth keeps it bright. Extremely durable: warm water, a soft brush, and it can take daily wear.
