About the Stone

Topaz is an aluminium silicate that forms in granite and volcanic rock; Brazil is the great source. Natural blue topaz is rare and pale, and the saturated sky, Swiss and London blues sold worldwide are produced by irradiating and heat-treating colourless topaz — a standard, stable and permanent treatment. December's second birthstone, alongside turquoise and tanzanite.

Wearing & Care

Rings take more knocks than any other piece of jewelry: put it on last, after lotion and perfume, and take it off for hand-washing, housework, gardening, the gym, swimming and sleep. Gold vermeil is a thick layer of gold over sterling silver — keep it away from perfume, lotion and water so the gold lasts, and polish it only with a soft cloth. Hard (Mohs 8) but brittle: topaz has a perfect cleavage and a sharp knock at the wrong angle can split it cleanly, so treat it as fragile despite the hardness. No ultrasonic, no steam. Cool water and a soft cloth; store it apart from other jewelry. Cleanse it with moonlight. US sizes. Not sure of yours?
