About the Stone

Turquoise is a hydrated copper aluminium phosphate — the blue comes from copper, and iron shifts it toward green. The dark veining is the host rock, a natural matrix and not a flaw. It is one of the oldest gemstones known, worked for at least six thousand years, from the American Southwest to Iran, China and Egypt. African Turquoise, Yellow Turquoise and Turquoise Howlite are different materials with their own teachings — December belongs to genuine turquoise only.

Wearing & Care

Put earrings on last, after perfume, lotion and hairspray, and take them off for showers, swimming and sleep. Keep the pair together in a pouch so the stones don't rub against other jewelry. Sterling silver tarnishes slowly in air; a silver polishing cloth keeps it bright. Turquoise is porous and keeps what it absorbs: put it on last, after perfume, lotion and sunscreen, and keep it from household cleaners — they stain it and can turn the blue green. No soaking, no salt, no ultrasonic or steam; wipe it with a soft dry cloth. Keep it out of prolonged strong sun and store it apart from harder stones. Never use it in gem water. Cleanse it with sage or moonlight.
