Sweetgrass Braid: a braid of dried sweetgrass (Hierochloe odorata), about 30 inches long.

The strands of the Braid symbolize gentleness, love and kindness. It pulls all energies toward it. (Spirits are attracted to it.) In the trinity of the smudging ceremony, Sweetgrass is used to call the energies forth, followed with Sage to clear and cleanse the energies, then finish with Palo Santo to raise vibration.

• Lights many times — light the tip, let it smoulder, press it out

How to Smudge

Light the very end of the braid and let it flame for a few seconds, then blow it out so it smoulders — sweetgrass burns slowly and smells like vanilla and hay. Fan the smoke where you want it, then press the ember out in sand or a shell. A braid lasts a long time; trim the burnt end as you go. Never leave it smouldering unattended.
