Pyrite, sometimes called Iron Pyrite (or Iron Sulfide, because that is what it is), has a crystal structure, yet is often thought of more as a metal. It grows in perfect cubes and often looks so perfect we doubt Mother Nature — yet she did it! It gets its name from the Greek pyros, meaning fire, and is known as "The Rock That Strikes Fire" because when struck with steel it will spark. It was nicknamed "Fool's Gold" during the western expansion, as many a novice prospector would think they had hit the mother lode, only to find out at the exchange office that they had found Iron Pyrite.

And though the novice prospectors may have been fools, Pyrite is definitely not. Pyrite is a stone of confidence. Its energy vibrates with the Solar Plexus chakra, the center of our manifesting temple, telling us to follow our gut instincts and create this world we live in as we truly want it to be. It acts as a shield against negativity. It can help one to be assertive in getting what they want, making it especially valuable as an ally in business.

Finally, its confidence is so powerful that it not only fills the Solar Plexus with its vibrant, self-assured energy — it can fill the entire auric field, mending other parts of it connected to other chakras that might have been weak or torn and leaking valuable prana.

About the Stone

Pyrite is iron sulfide, FeS₂, and it really does grow in natural cubes — the Victoria Mine at Navajún in Spain is famous for near-perfect free-standing ones, not carved. Chalcopyrite, sold as Peacock Ore, is a different mineral with its own teaching.

Wearing & Care

Rings take more knocks than any other piece of jewelry: put it on last, after lotion and perfume, and take it off for hand-washing, housework, gardening, the gym, swimming and sleep. Sterling silver tarnishes slowly in air; a silver polishing cloth keeps it bright. Keep Pyrite dry — never in water and never in a humid room. Moisture makes it slowly oxidize and crumble, and raw pieces can damage whatever is stored beside them. Wash your hands after handling rough material. Cleanse it with sage or moonlight. US sizes. Not sure of yours? Measure a ring that already fits across the inside — 16.5 mm is a 6, 17.3 a 7, 18.1 an 8, 18.9 a 9.
