About the Stone

Spectrolite is labradorite, a plagioclase feldspar, at its finest: the name was given to material found at Ylämaa, Finland in the 1940s that flashes the whole spectrum — red, orange, violet and green as well as the usual blue and gold. Much sold under the name now comes from Madagascar. The flash is labradorescence, light interfering between microscopic layers inside the crystal.

Wearing & Care

Rings take more knocks than any other piece of jewelry: put it on last, after lotion and perfume, and take it off for hand-washing, housework, gardening, the gym, swimming and sleep. Sterling silver tarnishes slowly in air; a silver polishing cloth keeps it bright. Hard enough for daily wear, but labradorite has two directions of cleavage and a sharp knock can split it along a flat plane — do not drop it, and store it apart from harder stones. Protect the polish, because the flash depends on it: a soft damp cloth, no ultrasonic, no salt, no soaking. Cleanse it with moonlight. US sizes. Not sure of yours?
