About the Stones

Emerald. Emerald is the green gem variety of beryl, coloured by chromium or vanadium, and the same mineral as Aquamarine and Morganite — each its own stone. Its characteristic inclusions and healed fractures are called the jardin, the garden, and they are expected rather than damage. Chiefly from Colombia, Zambia, Brazil and Ethiopia. May's birthstone.

Pearl. A pearl is not a stone: it is grown inside a mollusc, built from layers of nacre — aragonite platelets bound with protein. The glow comes from within, light playing between those layers, which is why "inner glow" is literal as well as a teaching. It is the same material as Sacred Crystals' Aragonite and coral, and one of the most fragile things in the range.

Wearing & Care

Rings take more knocks than any other piece of jewelry: put it on last, after lotion and perfume, and take it off for hand-washing, housework, gardening, the gym, swimming and sleep. Sterling silver tarnishes slowly in air; a silver polishing cloth keeps it bright. Emerald: Hard but brittle: the garden inside it means a sharp knock can chip it, and most emeralds are oil- or resin-filled, so no ultrasonic, no steam, no hot water, no solvents. Cool water and a soft cloth; take a ring off for hand-washing and housework. Cleanse it with moonlight — the full Moon especially. Pearl: Pearls go on last and come off first: perfume, hairspray and cosmetics dull the surface, and acids — vinegar, citrus, household cleaners — dissolve nacre. Wipe them with a soft damp cloth and dry; no ultrasonic, no soaking. Store them apart from harder stones, which scratch them. Cleanse them with moonlight. US sizes. Not sure of yours?
