About the Stone

Tanzanite is found in exactly one place on Earth: a few square kilometres of the Merelani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania, and the deposit is expected to be worked out within decades. It is the blue-violet variety of zoisite, named by Tiffany & Co. in 1968, and strongly pleochroic — blue, violet and burgundy depending on the angle, three colours from one crystal. Virtually all tanzanite is heat-treated to bring out the blue; the rough is usually brownish. A modern December birthstone.

Wearing & Care

Rings take more knocks than any other piece of jewelry: put it on last, after lotion and perfume, and take it off for hand-washing, housework, gardening, the gym, swimming and sleep. Sterling silver tarnishes slowly in air; a silver polishing cloth keeps it bright. One of the more fragile gems in the range: it has a perfect cleavage and a knock at the wrong angle can split it cleanly. No ultrasonic, no steam — ever. Warm soapy water and a soft cloth; avoid sudden temperature changes; store it padded and apart from other stones. Better as a pendant or earrings than a daily ring. US sizes. Not sure of yours?
