About the Stone

Spectrolite is labradorite, a plagioclase feldspar, at its finest: the name was given to material found at Ylämaa, Finland in the 1940s that flashes the whole spectrum — red, orange, violet and green as well as the usual blue and gold. Much sold under the name now comes from Madagascar. The flash is labradorescence, light interfering between microscopic layers inside the crystal.

Wearing & Care

Sterling silver tarnishes slowly in air; a silver polishing cloth keeps it bright. Put it on last, after perfume and lotion, and take it off for showers, swimming and sleep. Hard enough for daily wear, but labradorite has two directions of cleavage and a sharp knock can split it along a flat plane — do not drop it, and store it apart from harder stones. Protect the polish, because the flash depends on it: a soft damp cloth, no ultrasonic, no salt, no soaking. Cleanse it with moonlight.
