About the Stone

Smoky Quartz owes its brown-to-black color to natural radiation from the surrounding rock acting on trace aluminum in the crystal — the darkness is light having passed through the stone and changed it. Scotland's national gemstone, where it is called Cairngorm.

Wearing & Care

Rings take more knocks than any other piece of jewelry: put it on last, after lotion and perfume, and take it off for hand-washing, housework, gardening, the gym, swimming and sleep. Sterling silver tarnishes slowly in air; a silver polishing cloth keeps it bright. Keep Smoky Quartz out of prolonged strong sun, which can fade the color back toward clear. Otherwise one of the most robust stones in the shop. Cleanse it with sage or moonlight. US sizes. Not sure of yours?
