Hematite is a tricky stone, as its coloring does not match its assigned chakra. It is a Solar Plexus stone and a guardian of trusting your gut instincts. It is the most important ore of iron — Vero calls it the Crystal form of Iron, a very close relative to the cast iron skillets our foremothers used. It is mined primarily to be made into iron, and then steel; without it, life as we know it would not be.

About the Stone

Whatever its color — red, brown, black, grey or silver — raw Hematite always leaves a red streak, and it is why Mars is called the Red Planet. It has been used as a pigment for some 40,000 years. Hematite is not naturally magnetic; magnetite is.

Wearing & Care

Put earrings on last, after perfume, lotion and hairspray, and take them off for showers, swimming and sleep. Keep the pair together in a pouch so the stones don't rub against other jewelry. Sterling silver tarnishes slowly in air; a silver polishing cloth keeps it bright. Hematite is iron and it rusts: keep it dry, never soak it or cleanse it with salt water, and dry it promptly if it gets wet.
