Shungite is an almost pure carbon mineral. It is another stone that is not technically a crystal — it has no crystalline structure or pattern, even at the microscopic level. It formed approximately 2 billion years ago, when ancient oil deposits aged and became heated by the Earth. These heated mixtures of ancient earth and oil then became pressurized as they sank into the Earth, and Shungite was born.

It is found exclusively in Russia, and was used by Czar Peter the Great as a water purifier — water is still run over blocks of shungite in some places in rural Russia to purify it. Its magic goes back to Rasputin and the enchantment of the eastern Russian forests. It can help release stress and anxiety, and provide energy boosts throughout your day. It has balance. It is an important stone, like Black Tourmaline, for protecting us from EMFs — the electromagnetic frequencies of cell phones, microwaves and the like — that disturb our energy field.

About the Stone

Shungite has attracted scientific interest for the unusual properties of its carbon-rich composition; it was the first rock in which naturally occurring fullerenes were identified. We sell it for its energy and its story — not for making drinking water.

Wearing & Care

Rings take more knocks than any other piece of jewelry: put it on last, after lotion and perfume, and take it off for hand-washing, housework, gardening, the gym, swimming and sleep. Sterling silver tarnishes slowly in air; a silver polishing cloth keeps it bright. Shungite is soft and raw pieces leave black carbon residue on hands and fabric. Wipe with a dry cloth.
