Its name is derived from the Arabic word "faridat," meaning gem, and it is also referred to as the "evening emerald" due to its dazzling glow under artificial light.

Peridot is a variety of the mineral olivine, formed deep within the Earth's mantle under intense heat and pressure. It is brought to the surface through volcanic activity, particularly in basalt lava flows. Peridot crystals are typically found in igneous rocks, often alongside other minerals like basalt and chromite. The gemstone's distinctive green color is due to the presence of iron within its crystal structure.

About the Stone

Peridot is gem-quality olivine, and its green is part of the mineral itself rather than an impurity — one of very few gems that comes in only one colour. It forms deep in the Earth's mantle and rides up in basalt, and it has also been found in meteorites. August's birthstone.

Care

Reasonably hard but sensitive to acids and sudden temperature change: warm water and a soft cloth, no ultrasonic, and keep it away from household cleaners. Cleanse it with moonlight.
