About the Stones

Aquamarine. Aquamarine is the blue to blue-green variety of beryl — the same mineral family as Emerald and Morganite, each its own stone.

Garnet. Garnet is a family of minerals rather than one; Almandine, the deep red iron-aluminum garnet, is the one the world simply calls Garnet.

Peridot. Peridot is gem-quality olivine, and its green is part of the mineral itself rather than an impurity — one of very few gems that comes in only one colour.

Amethyst. Amethyst is quartz with iron inclusions that give it its color; the most coveted deep purple comes from Uruguay, though some Brazilian amethyst rivals it.

Citrine. Citrine and Amethyst are the same stone: iron inclusions in Amethyst turn it yellow or orange when heated.

Wearing & Care

Put earrings on last, after perfume, lotion and hairspray, and take them off for showers, swimming and sleep. Keep the pair together in a pouch so the stones don't rub against other jewelry. Sterling silver tarnishes slowly in air; a silver polishing cloth keeps it bright. Peridot: Reasonably hard but sensitive to acids and sudden temperature change: warm water and a soft cloth, no ultrasonic, and keep it away from household cleaners. Amethyst: Amethyst's purple fades with long hours in direct sun — it is the stone Vero uses to teach the rule.
