About the Stone

Mexican Fire Opal is orange-to-red opal coloured by iron oxides, principally from Querétaro and Jalisco in Mexico. It is usually transparent to translucent and often faceted rather than showing play-of-colour, which is why it suits rings and pendants. Opal is hydrated silica, softer than quartz.

Wearing & Care

Rings take more knocks than any other piece of jewelry: put it on last, after lotion and perfume, and take it off for hand-washing, housework, gardening, the gym, swimming and sleep. Opal can craze — develop fine internal cracks — with heat, strong light or very dry air, and at its hardness it scratches more easily than quartz. Keep it out of prolonged sun and dry heat, take it off for rough work, and never use ultrasonic or steam. Cool water briefly and a soft cloth. Cleanse it with moonlight. US sizes. Not sure of yours?
