Lava Rock — the more common variety, also known as Basalt — is a porous stone with a natural range of colors, depending on the peak temperature the flow reached and what impurities were in the flow. Yes, Lava Rock starts out as the flow of lava spewing from the mouth of Pele herself, so hot that it can destroy all that stands in its path. However, it cools quickly and becomes very porous, thus its use in aromatherapy: its pores hold scented oils well and will keep scent for a period of time.

Lava, like many of the black stones, has its own take on protection. It instills in its energy partners strength of character and courage to follow through. Just as it was born of the flow, it is a steady partner with a guiding hand as we transition through life's challenges and opportunities. Lava Rock can be a stable and grounding force in one's life, and may also assist with recovery after life has presented unforeseen challenges that may have shaken a person to their core. It is an excellent partner for dissipating anger as well. Lava Rock also connects you to Mother Earth. Meditate with it and the Goddess Pele and reach into the core of her knowledge to bring forth her strength and wisdom.

About the Stone

Lava stone is basalt, the most common rock on Earth's surface — most of the ocean floor is made of it. Gas bubbles trapped as the lava cooled leave the pitted, vesicular texture, which is exactly why it holds essential oils. Its natural colours run black, red, grey, brown and metallic silver; lava beads are often dyed black, and take the colour well while staying porous.

Care

Porous — it absorbs whatever it is put in, which is the feature. Put a drop of essential oil on the bead and let it soak in; never put undiluted oil on the skin under it. Do not soak lava in water; wipe it clean and air-dry. Cleanse it with moonlight or a smudge.
