About the Stone

Iolite is the gem variety of cordierite, violet-blue and strongly pleochroic — turn it and it shifts from violet to near-colourless to yellowish grey — which is why sailors called it the Viking's Compass. Named from the Greek for violet; chiefly from India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Tanzania.

Care

Brittle, with distinct cleavage: it chips and splits more readily than its hardness suggests, so protect it from knocks and skip ultrasonic and steam. Brief water contact is fine; do not soak. Cleanse it with moonlight.
