About the Stone

Hypersthene is a pyroxene — a magnesium-iron silicate — with a bronze or coppery schiller from microscopic plates of ilmenite or hematite aligned inside the crystal, the same trick that lights Gold Sheen Obsidian. The name was retired by mineralogists in 1988 but the trade has never let it go. Chiefly from Labrador, Greenland, India and Norway.

Care

Softer than quartz and it cleaves in two directions — chips on impact, so avoid knocks. Water-safe but do not soak; a soft cloth. Cleanse it with moonlight.
