About the Stones

Peridot. Peridot is gem-quality olivine, and its green is part of the mineral itself rather than an impurity — one of very few gems that comes in only one colour. It forms deep in the Earth's mantle and rides up in basalt, and it has also been found in meteorites. August's birthstone.

Blue Topaz. Topaz is an aluminium silicate that forms in granite and volcanic rock; Brazil is the great source. Natural blue topaz is rare and pale, and the saturated sky, Swiss and London blues sold worldwide are produced by irradiating and heat-treating colourless topaz — a standard, stable and permanent treatment. December's second birthstone, alongside turquoise and tanzanite.

Wearing & Care

Rings take more knocks than any other piece of jewelry: put it on last, after lotion and perfume, and take it off for hand-washing, housework, gardening, the gym, swimming and sleep. Gold vermeil is a thick layer of gold over sterling silver — keep it away from perfume, lotion and water so the gold lasts, and polish it only with a soft cloth. Peridot: Reasonably hard but sensitive to acids and sudden temperature change: warm water and a soft cloth, no ultrasonic, and keep it away from household cleaners. Cleanse it with moonlight. Blue Topaz: Hard (Mohs 8) but brittle: topaz has a perfect cleavage and a sharp knock at the wrong angle can split it cleanly, so treat it as fragile despite the hardness. No ultrasonic, no steam. Cool water and a soft cloth; store it apart from other jewelry. Cleanse it with moonlight. US sizes. Not sure of yours?
